Week 77 - "Let go, or be dragged" - Zen Proverb
The tendency to hold on to things, whether it's a missed opportunity, a lost chance, or someone who got away, is an interestingly “human” trait. Somehow, we’ve figured out a way to be on top of the world but still be weighed down by past baggage.
It’s fascinating really, how hard we can hold onto things when we know they’ve passed us. And even if we grow past something, our mind still struggles to let go, clinging on to anything it can.
It’s especially interesting because it’s not a complicated thing to do. Letting go really just means accepting something isn’t yours anymore. And when it’s literally not yours anymore, it should be easy.
But it never is. Because when you let go, it means giving up on something that might not come back again.
And that hurts.
But what’s the alternative?
Hold onto something out of your control, hoping for it to come back?
Yes, it might happen, but more often than not, refusing to let go means being dragged and hurt by the weight of something that is simply part of the past.
Understandably, we think of life as a circle, believing things will come back again, but that’s just not the case. It’s when you let go can you be open to new possibilities and what can happen in the future.
Chances are, you’re probably terrified of letting something go in your life.
I get it.
But take a look in the mirror, and ask yourself if it’s really worth being dragged along for.
After all, every rope is going to have its’ place in leading you to where you’re going, you just have to know when it’s time to let go.
